How Does Location & Service-Area Targeting Work?

How MLA sets your service area, and how to include or exclude specific ZIP codes.

Written by Support Team

BEWARE: Billable leads are always assessed based on your 25 to 50 mile service area radius. Leads from within your 25 to 50 mile service area are considered billable regardless of zip code exclusions, or inclusions. Before sending us a ZIP code list: Tell us whether the ZIPs are to be INCLUDED (targeted) or EXCLUDED (not targeted).

The default targeting mode we use

Every Pay-Per-Lead campaign we run for you uses a 25 to 50 mile service area radius as targeting location:

  • Radius targeting: A 25–50 mile radius from your office location(s). Selected upon sign up; automatically covers every ZIP code within the radius.

How to change or refine your targeting

Adding ZIPs to your service area

Send us the list of ZIPs to include. Tell us whether they extend your existing service area, or limit it.

Removing ZIPs from your service area

Send us the list of ZIPs to exclude. Common reasons contractors exclude specific ZIPs:

  • Low-income areas where financing is unlikely to close

  • Areas where crew safety is a concern

  • Areas outside the contractor's insurance / licensing footprint

Switching between radius and explicit ZIP list

Radius based service areas is our default target mode; ZIP code lists gives your campaign finer targeting ability, however adding zip code inclusions or exclusions does not affect your billable service area.

What happens when a lead comes in from outside your service area?

Leads outside your designated 25 to 50 mile service area are non-billable per our billability criteria. If you receive one, dispute it within 7 days — see our article on lead disputes for details.

How to submit a targeting change

Email [email protected] with:

  1. Whether the ZIPs are to be INCLUDED or EXCLUDED

  2. The full ZIP list (csv. file required)

  3. Any context (e.g. "adding a new branch," "excluding low-income areas")
